Pharmacy is the most neglected professional degree in Pakistan and efforts are being made to enhance its current status. Pharmacists are those health care professionals who play an integral role in optimizing patient’s quality of life by cooperating with physicians, nurses and other paramedical staff.
In order to become a pharmacist, you have to secure your admission in Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree programme that is being offered in different private and government oriented institutions having duration of five years. Once you have completed this degree then you can officially work as pharmacist in various healthcare sectors including hospitals.
The use of prefix “Dr” is allowed to use by pharmacists as said by the Prof. Dr. Khalid Hussain, president of Pakistan Pharmacist Association (Punjab) but unfortunately Punjab Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) said few days back that pharmacist cannot use the word “Dr” before their names as it is misleading and could increase the risk of quackery in Pakistan.
According to the press release of PPA.
“It is not in the domain of PMDC to decide whether pharmacists should use prefix “Dr” or not because there is a separate governing body of Pharmacy namely Pakistan Council of Pharmacy (PCP). The pharmacists can use prefix “Dr” as per recommendations of PCP.”
